-
The first title of this movie was Weirdo, but executives changed it because they could sell it better with strategic marketing if they called it The Gift.
-
The trivia night references Charles Manson murders and Helter-Skelter, and Charles Manson believed in an impending apocalyptic war. Gordon also presents the movie Apocalypse Now as a gift earlier in the movie.
-
Gordon gives a total of eleven "gifts" throughout the film, depending on your interpretation. The bottle of wine, the fish, fish food, the apology letter, Mr. Jangles returned (if you believe Gordon did in fact steal him), the baby carrier, the key, CD, DVD implying Gordon may have impregnated Robyn, the baby (if you believe Gordon is the father), and the Apocalypse Now (1979) DVD. He also gave them glass cleaner for all their windows.
-
Joel Edgerton dyed his hair a reddish-brown to give his character an off putting look, and wore brown contacts to imply that Simon's child could be his. He naturally has dark brown hair and blue eyes.
-
First theatrical release for distributor STX Entertainment.
-
There is a reference to the film Blue Velvet in which Dennis Hopper says "Heineken?F*** that s***! Pabst Blue Ribbon!". In this film Jason Bateman can be seen emptying two bottles of Heineken before opening a bottle of Pabst Blue Ribbon.
-
When Rebecca Hall's character is in the hospital, she stays in Room 237 - a reference to Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (1980).
-
As he wanted to focus on directing, Joel Edgerton filmed his own scenes as Gordo after two weeks of shooting and completed them in seven days.
-
The alternate ending reveals that Gordo did not rape Robyn. Instead, Gordo allows Simon to believe that he did thus ruining his life the same way Simon ruined his.
-
The question Gordo was asking at trivia had two parts. The first answer was the Beatles white album, and the follow up answer was the Helter Skelter murders referencing serial killer Charles Manson. In British English, a Helter-Skelter is a fairground slide that twists around the outside of a central tower.
-
First feature film directed by Joel Edgerton.
-
Gordon's trivia night reference to Charles Manson foreshadows the video of him entering Simon and Robyn's house: Manson and his followers went on "creepy-crawling" burglary missions, breaking into and sneaking around random houses while the occupants slept.
