Although the movie is not related to the video game American McGee's Alice (2000) (itself a horror-themed "sequel" to the book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland) in any formal fashion, it does bear several striking similarities. Both feature Alice in an insane asylum (albeit in completely different circumstances), Time's castle is reminiscent of the level "Crazed Clockwork", while the venous, red, organic look of the Red Queen's castle, is similar to the level "Ascension", which also depicts the Red Queen's castle. None of these aesthetics or plot devices feature in the books.

This movie marks Tim Burton and Johnny Depp's ninth collaboration together following Edward Scissorhands (1990), Ed Wood (1994), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Corpse Bride (2005), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), Alice in Wonderland (2010), and Dark Shadows (2012). This is also their first collaboration wherein Tim doesn't direct, but produces.

There are four people in this movie who portrayed characters from the Sherlock Holmes novels. Andrew Scott played Jim Moriarty in the BBC series Sherlock (2010), Rhys Ifans played Mycroft Holmes in Elementary (2012), Stephen Fry played Mycroft in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011), which also featured Geraldine James as Mrs. Hudson.

The ship's name "Wonder" is the name of the second out of four ships built for the Disney Cruise Line. The "Magic" being the first, The "Dream" third and the fourth being the "Fantasy". Disney Magic's maiden voyage was on July 30, 1998. Disney Wonder's maiden voyage was on August 1999. Disney's Dream and Disney Fantasy entered service in January 2011 and March 2012, respectively.
