Alec Baldwin was first choice to play Dr. Richard Kimble. When he dropped out, Andy Garcia was considered for the role, but later worked with Andrew Davis on Steal Big Steal Little (1995). Harrison Ford had previously played a role that was first offered to Baldwin, in Patriot Games (1992), which happened to be the role of Jack Ryan.

While Marlon Brando had always greatly admired Charles Chaplin's work and looked upon him as "probably the most talented man the [movie] medium has ever produced," the two superstars did not get along during the shooting of this movie. In his autobiography, Brando described Chaplin as "probably the most sadistic man I'd ever met." Chaplin, on his side, said that working with Brando simply was "impossible."

This may be an Easter egg for the nerdfighters, the name for vlogbrothers fans. The two giraffes refer to the fact that the vlogbrothers placed giraffe sex thumbnails on some of their videos even though they have nothing to do with the videos' content.

The reveal of David taking the place of Walter and leaving a message in his voice is reminiscent to a proposed, alternate ending to the original Alien (1979) by Ridley Scott, wherein the Xenomorph would succeed in killing the crew and take over the Nostromo, ending the movie with leaving a message in the voice of Dallas. This ending was rejected by 20th Century Fox, who instead demanded Scott change the ending to one where the Alien died.

This film was originally a spin-off from The Amazing Spider-Man series and would feature Dane DeHaan, Paul Giamatti and Chris Cooper returning to the roles they played previously. Jamie Foxx, Rhys Ifans and Andrew Garfield were also rumored to cameo. This plan fell through after Sony's Email Hack scandal in 2014 which later influenced the decision to collaborate with Marvel on future Spider-Man projects. In effect, this film was not cancelled, instead pushed back to after the new Spider-Man films were established.
