In the comics there have been multiple versions of the Sinster Six with many different characters. Those included Hobgoblin, Beetle, Venom, and others. There was also a Sinster Seven, Sinster Twelve, and Superior Six. The Sinister Six's Ultimate Marvel version was the Ultimate Six consisting of Sandman, Doctor Octopus, Kraven the Hunter, Electro and Green Goblin.

This film was originally a spin-off from The Amazing Spider-Man series and would feature Dane DeHaan, Paul Giamatti and Chris Cooper returning to the roles they played previously. Jamie Foxx, Rhys Ifans and Andrew Garfield were also rumored to cameo. This plan fell through after Sony's Email Hack scandal in 2014 which later influenced the decision to collaborate with Marvel on future Spider-Man projects.
