Cathleen Trigg's character's name is Mary Ilene Caselotti. This is a tribute to Mary Costa, the voice of Disney's Sleeping Beauty (1959), Ilene Woods, who did the voice of Disney's Cinderella (1950), and Adriana Caselotti, the voice of Disney's first Princess, Snow White in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937).

Idina Menzel, a Broadway veteran and Tony Award winner, does not sing in the movie. In an interview, Menzel stated she felt flattered to be hired solely as an actress.

In traditional Disney movies, the main female character usually makes a transition from being an ordinary woman into becoming a Princess by the end of the movie. In this movie, the character of Giselle is a would-be Princess who makes the transition to becoming an ordinary modern woman. (The supporting character Nancy does become a Princess in her place.)

Giselle was ultimately not added to the Disney Princess line. Idina Menzel (Nancy Tremaine) voiced Elsa from Frozen (2013) and Frozen II (2019), another role which was originally planned and assumed to be added to the Disney Princess line, but ended up not being added. At the end of this movie, Nancy marries Edward, and the novelization states that she became Queen of Andalasia. Also, Elsa scolds her sister Anna for wanting to marry a man she just met, something which Nancy does at the end of this movie.

In one scene, Prince Edward rides a bus through Times Square. In the background a large poster can be seen advertising the musical play "Wicked", which originally featured Idina Menzel, who played Nancy in this movie, in the starring role. Furthermore, Stephen Schwartz, who was the lyricist for this movie, was the composer and lyricist for Wicked (2009). The poster of Superman Returns (2006) can also be seen, in which James Marsden appeared.

There was also the Disney live-action movie with the title character named Johnny Tremain (1957). The surname of Patrick Dempsey's character Robert is Philip, which is the name of the Prince in Sleeping Beauty (1959), Prince Phillip.
