As a wizard, Jafar transforms Iago into a gigantic and monstrous bird so it can recover for him the magic lamp from Jasmine and Aladdin, who ran away with it riding the flying carpet. This is a reference to the roc bird, an enormous eagle of medieval Arab mythology. Its most famous appearance is in the tale of "Sinbad the Sailor" in the "One Thousand and One Nights" book.
