The Hulk's origin in this film is a combination of the Marvel Ultimates comics (experimenting on Captain America's super-soldier serum) and The Incredible Hulk (1977) (over-exposure to gamma radiation in an experiment). Even the equipment seen is a close match to that used in the television series, right down to the light sliding over Banner's face.
