On a superficial analysis of the movie, one would think that what happened was the exact opposite. Charles constantly is the one saving the others lives, and motivating to keep going, so why would he say that? He says it because, right there, he realizes that if it wasn't for them, "companions/friends", he wouldn't have pushed as hard to return alive and would've perished, as he says during the film "of shame."
