Iron Man 2 ending explained (spoilers)

Tony uses his father's model for The City of Tomorrow to create a new element to replace the palladium core of his chest arc reactor.

At the expo, Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke) takes control of the Hammerdrones and a Rhodey-manned War Machine to destroy Iron Man and the Stark expo. Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow) exposes Justin Hammer to the police, and they take him into custody. Natalie/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) manages to infiltrate Hammer industries and relinquish control of the War Machine to Rhodey (Don Cheadle). He and Tony team up and destroy several Hammerdrones before being confronted by an iron-suited Vanko, complete with improved electric whips. Tony and Rhodey destroy his core arc by crossing the streams of their repulsor blasts. Vanko laughs as he reveals that his suit and all the fallen Hammerdrones are rigged to explode. Tony manages to save Pepper and get her to safety, where she resigns her position as CEO of Stark Industries, and then they kiss. Nick Fury informs Tony that Natalie gave Iron Man a go to join the Avenger Initiative, but not if it is piloted by Tony. Fury asks Tony to at least be a consultant.

In Washington, DC, Tony and Rhodey are given the congressional medals of honor by Senator Stern, who accidentally sticks Tony with the pin, concluding with the quip, Funny how annoying a little prick can be.

And after the credits roll, we find out from Agent Coulson that SHIELD has discovered Mjolnir in the desert.

Tony (Robert Downey Jr.) and Rhodey (Don Cheadle) defeat Ivan (Mickey Rourke). Ivan and the drones self destruct and Tony quickly flies away and rescues Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow) since shes in the blast radius of many drones. Pepper and Tony kiss. Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell) is arrested. Tony and Rhodey are given medals by the senator (Garry Shandling) that wanted to seize Tonys technology. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) tells Tony that after reading Agent Romanoffs (Scarlett Johansson) report on whats happened, its been decided that Tonys not a member of the Avenger Initiative but an adviser. Post credits scene: the S.H.I.E.L.D. agent that was assigned to Tonys house goes to New Mexico. He sees a crater and Thors hammer. The agent calls Fury and says Sir, we found him...

Obadiah (Jeff Bridges) takes Tonys (Robert Downey Jr.) second version of the artificial heart used to power the suit (and thats used to keep himself alive) and uses it to power another suit that was recently built at Stark Industries. Tony battles Obadiah in his suit using the first version of the artificial heart. Tony asks Pepper (Gwyneth Paltrow) to overload Stark Industries arc reactor and Obadiahs suit malfunctions and falls into the reactor. The next day, at a press conference, instead of covering up the truth by saying that someone in an armored suit is his bodyguard (nicknamed by the press Iron Man), Tony reveals that he is Iron Man. A few minutes into the end credits, Tony arrives home and notices that someones sneaked inside his home. He asks the mysterious person who he is and its Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) who is the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. (the organization that wanted to talk with Tony Stark, throughout the movie, about how he escaped captivity in the mountains and the ones who helped cover up the arc reactor explosion). Fury says to Tony that now that hes revealed to the world that hes Iron Man.. hes stepped into another world he didnt know existed. Fury tells Tony that he wants to talk with him about a project called The Avengers Initiative...
