The film was originally darker and a tad more graphic. However, when test audiences reacted poorly, the film was re-edited and its release date was pushed back.

Alice Cooper has claimed on numerous occasions that Mae West sexually propositioned each of the movie's male costars - but his fans know that he's prone to lies and exaggeration. The producers hired several rock stars to try to attract a young audience, and West was initially quite apprehensive, but she and Cooper had a mutual friend in Groucho Marx, who took her to one of his concerts. West gradually warmed to Cooper and filming went off without a hitch.

Warner Bros. optioned the rights to Mae West's 1961 play, and then it got stuck in development hell for over a decade. After an appearance in Myra Breckinridge (1970) renewed interest in her career, West fought to get the movie made and eventually re-secured the rights. The film was produced independently, but as a courtesy to the star, WB bankrolled the world premiere screening in September 1977.

When the play "Sextet" debuted in Chicago in 1961, it was riddled with disasters. Mae West came down with laryngitis and had to cancel the first three performances. Sound problems rendered portions of the premiere inaudible, and a supporting player kept flubbing his lines. During the second performance, Alan Marshal, playing Sir Michael Barrington, suffered a heart attack. He died a few days later, which led to the cancellation of the next performance. With a script in-hand, producer Henry Guettel awkwardly took over the role for several performances. Tom Conway flew in from New York to provide a reprieve, but he read the script, then promptly returned home. Francis Bethencourt ultimately took the part, and remained with the production as it toured the country. West revised the script numerous times, and while the show ultimately garnered acclaim, it never opened on Broadway.
