After getting the new Bluesmobile Elwood drives to the club. Just before getting there, they drive past the location of Ray's Music Exchange from the original movie. There's a sign above the original mural outside the store that says "Rays have moved".

Gilley's was located at 4500 Spencer Highway, Pasadena, Texas. Originally known as Shelly's, it was renamed for country singer Mickey Gilley when he became part-owner with founder Sherwood Cryer. Gilley's closed in 1989 and burned down a year later.

The script was originally written for Dennis Quaid for the central role of Bud. The lead part in the end went to John Travolta.
