Wyatt Earp ending explained (spoilers)

Morgan (Ashby) and Virgil Earp (Madsen) are both attacked on the same night by people who could possibly have been working with Curly Bill Brocius (Smith). Morgan dies but Virgil just has to lose his arm. Wyatt Earp (Costner) becomes enraged and sets out to avenge his brother. He kills one of Brocius' men at a train that was being watched. While riding through a canyon, Wyatt is fired upon. He manages to get a few kills with Doc (Quaid) backing him up. He then gets a double barreled shotgun and blows Curly Bill away. After that, we see many years later that Wyatt has travelled to Alaska with Josie. While on the boat, a young teenager approachs Wyatt and comments that Wyatt is a hero to him, because he saved his father on a previous occasion. Wyatt doesn't remember but Josie tells him that's the way it was.
