Beauty and the Beast ending explained (spoilers)

  • The Beast comes to love Belle so much that he lets her leave his castle (with his magic mirror) to attend to her ailing father Maurice, even though this would seem to doom him and his servants to the curse that only her love can break.

Belle tends to Maurice only to find that Gaston has bribed a lunatic asylum's keeper to lock Maurice up, ostensibly due to his ravings about a beast in a castle, but really so Gaston can blackmail Belle into marrying him.

To save her father, Belle shows the villagers the Beast with the mirror. Enraged that Belle cares more for the Beast than she ever will for him, Gaston encourages the fearful crowd to attack the castle and kill the Beast. Locking Belle and Maurice in a cellar, he leads the mob away, but Chip (the teacup) had stowed away with Belle, and he uses Maurice's wood-chopping machine to rescue them.

At the castle, the other Enchanted Objects fight the mob back, but Gaston finds and begins to brutally attack the Beast, who's lost his will to live - until he hears Belle crying out far below. He fights back but ultimately spares Gaston's life.

Just as Beast and Belle are reunited, Gaston mortally wounds him and falls to his death when the Beast rears in pain. Belle finally admits her love for the dying Beast just before the last rose petal falls - and having thus broken the curse, the Beast is restored to a healthy, human prince, and all the Objects to their human (or animal, in the case of the Footstool) selves as well, to all live happily ever after.

  • A spoiled and arrogant Prince (Dan Stevens) is cursed by an Enchantress to be a Beast while the subjects in his castle are turned into household objects. The Beast must find someone to love and love him in return before the last petal from the enchanted rose falls, or else he will remain a beast forever.

A village girl named Belle (Emma Watson) seeks adventure away from her hometown. When her father Maurice (Kevin Kline) comes across the Beasts castle, he is taken prisoner by the Beast. Belle offers to take his place, and the Beast agrees.

While the Beast comes off as rough, he and Belle warm up to each other, and he falls in love with her. Meanwhile, Belle is pursued by the boorish hunter Gaston (Luke Evans), who will stop at nothing to marry her. He even tries to have Maurice committed to an asylum so he can have her. The Beast lets Belle go so she can return to her father. When Belle proves the Beast exists, Gaston leads the villagers to attack the castle and kill him.

The castle objects scare the villagers away, but Gaston is determined to kill the Beast. Belle returns as Gaston is fighting the Beast. The Beast spares Gastons life, but Gaston shoots the Beast before he falls to his death. The Beast dies as Belle tells him he loves her. The Enchantress, who was disguised as a beggar woman, breaks the spell upon hearing Belle declaring her love, and the Beast and his subjects turn human again. Belle and the Prince then stay together in the castle.

  • Gaston falls off the castle to his death, but not before he wounds the Beast. The Beast is about to die, but Belle says she loves him before the last rose petal falls. He is turned back into the prince by a magical shot transformation, and all the other objects turn back into people with a whoosh, and they have a wedding for Belle and the Prince. However, only the aftermath is shown with Belle and the prince dancing with the castle personnel arguing with each other and Chip still having cup tendencies, which the senior citizens of the story find charming.
