  • A few of the escapees make it to freedom, but most are recaptured and executed on the spot. The noteable exception is Virgil 'The Cooler King' Hilts (Steve McQueen), who, upon being caught, is returned to his isolation in the Cooler.

    50 are recaptured and executed.

    Approximately a dozen are recaptured and sent back to the prisoner's camp. Some of the prisoners do escape to other countries like Spain and Switzerland.

    Among the killed are: Mac, Cavendish, Ashley-Pitt, Blythe the forger (Donald Pleasence), The designer of the plan - Bartlett (Richard Attenborough). designer of the plan).

    The recaptured: Hendley The Scrounger (James Garner), Hilts the cooler king (Steve McQueen).

    The ones who escape: The Tunnel Kings Willie and Danny Velinski (Charles Bronson), Segdwick the Australian (James Coburn).

    The camp's commander is dismissed from his post.

  • About 70 of them escape, but 50 get caught and shot, including Roger, Mac and Ashley. 11 of them get brought back, including the Scrounger and Steve McQueen, who gets put in the cooler again. The forger goes blind, escapes with the scrounger and then dies. The only Aussie and the two tunnel diggers get away, but these are the only ones we know of who do.
