At the premiere of this movie, some of the teenagers in the theater wept when they saw James Dean appear on the screen. The reason for this was due to the fact that they would never see him in another movie.

According to Chevy Chase, he was impressed by the original script's raunchy, R-rated, "over the top" tone (particularly a filmed, but ultimately cut, gag involving MacDonald and Lange delivering donuts that had been photographed around their genitals), and went so far as to tell MacDonald and Lange to not allow any changes. However, the studio insisted on a PG-13 rating, and re-scheduled the film's release from February to June, where it fared poorly against blockbusters like Godzilla (1998). Unfortunately, no alternate scenes had been shot, and the dialogue could only be changed with the actor's re-recording their lines. This may explain why some of the dialogue is dubbed in certain scenes.

Harve Bennett was mostly a television producer before working for the film, and a relative newcomer to Paramount Pictures. He was offered the role of producing film by executives Jeffrey Katzenberg, Michael Eisner and Charles Bluhdorn. The first two were interested in having Bennett produce an improved sequel to Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979). Bennett thought that film was boring, and that he could easily produce something more interesting. Bluhdorn was mostly interested in having a tighter budget and asked if he Bennett could make the film on a budget less than $45 million. Bennett answered that he could produce 5 films on a $45 million budget. He got the job.
