  • There is a nifty detail in one of the early scenes which is left unexplained to the audience but underscores Robert Jordan's personality. It occurs when Jordan meets with General Goltz in the saloon to discuss his next mission. Since there was no bartender, Jordan starts to pour himself a drink. It is not scotch, vodka or bourbon. No. Jordan pours some water into a glass, then places a slotted spoon (with a sugar cube presumably) over the rim and pours a bit of alcohol from the bottle over the sugar. That can mean only one thing: Jordan's drink of choice is Absinthe ! Absinthe is a green colored liqueur which has a bitter licorice flavor and can be up to 75 proof with powerful, possibly hallucinogenic effects. It's made from wormwood and other herbs. Believed to be too dangerous in the US, it was banned from Prohibition to July 2007. It was a favored drink for Vincent Van Gogh, Oscar Wilde and Ernest Hemingway. Later, in the cave, Jordan pulls out his hip flask to pour himself a little drink but holds back from sharing with the others. He says, "...you wouldn't like this "medicine." It's the wormwood." Now, Robert Jordan is a robust, Type "A", controlled person but he also prefers to sip "The Green Devil", Absinthe: a bitter liquid and acquired taste which in excess literally could drive a person off a cliff. This bit of inconsistency in his personality is left unexplained to the average viewer of this film yet means a lot to those who know of this drink and what it means.

For this role, her hair was cut short. Meanwhile, for "Casablanca", Warner Brothers wanted to substitute another song for "As Time Goes By" and re-shoot some scenes with Bergman. However, since her hair had been cut, there would be a problem with continuity (even if Bergman wore a wig), so the idea was dropped.
