When Dustin Hoffman's Best Actor Oscar was presented to him by Michael Douglas, the words that preceded the announcement of Hoffman's name were, "...and the Oscar goes to..." which, for the first time, had replaced the traditional line, "...and the winner is...", et cetera. The Academy had made the switch for discretionary purposes as well as to avoid the implication that the nominees who did not win were losers, and the practice has been in effect ever since 1989.

Krzysztof Kieslowski was a very precise filmmaker. During the scene in which Dominique has an orgasm, he told Julie Delpy exactly how long she had to moan and when she had to start to moan louder.

Julie Delpy shared that Krzysztof Kieslowski would sit under the camera and chain-smoke. Because he always sat under the camera, he was in very close proximity to the actors during close-ups. She continued that this was reassuring, as he was solely focused on his actors, but sometimes it could be distracting.

A woman trying to throw a bottle into a glass container is visible at the beginning of the movie. This seems to be the same woman seen doing this in "Three Colors: Blue", probably suggesting a parallel action of the movies. In "Three Colors: Red" the same woman can be seen again, this time, however, it is night and she receives help from Valentine, thus finally succeeding in throwing the bottle into the glass container.
