Originally, the film was to take place in Boston, Massachusetts, before Director James Wan decided to have the film set in Columbia, South Carolina. The novel, completely different from the movie, took place in Chicago, Illinois.

The ficticious "Shadow Company" is running heroin from SE Asia on the premise of still having connections in the Golden Triangle, having been mercenary contractors to Air America, a CIA owned and operated airline that flew mostly in Southeast Asia. Mel Gibson would later star in Air America, a story about pilots flying people, supplies and sometimes drugs around Southeast Asia, the latter to feed and pay for troops commanded by a ruthless General with dreams of going to America.
