First high-profile film role for Anne Heche. Two days after being cast in this movie, Heche was introduced to the public at large as Ellen DeGeneres's new girlfriend, leading director Ivan Reitman to say, "We hired a relatively unknown and now she's one of the most famous women in America."

Temuera Morrison and Cliff Curtis are speaking Maori in their roles as pirates. However they didn't know how to say the complex lines they were supposed to (about gold and pirates, etc), so they just ad-libbed random everyday stuff such as what they were cooking for dinner. (From Temuera's biography "Temuera Morrison: From Haka to Hollywood").

The plane that Quinn flies is a DeHavilland Beaver. Star Harrison Ford is a licensed pilot and owns a DeHaviland Beaver but he also flew the one in the movie. He had to go through several certifications for the insurance company to allow him not only to fly, but to also fly with the rest of the cast in the plane.

Originally, the film was intended to make Anne Heche, then a virtually unknown actress, into the "It girl" of the period. In the same week she was cast - verbally, but not yet signed - Touchstone Pictures fired Heche after she made a red carpet appearance on the arm of the most famous lesbian in the world, Ellen DeGeneres, whom she had met just days earlier. (From a business standpoint, studio heads now felt that trying to sell Heche as a pinup type would be a waste of investment.) Harrison Ford used his influence to get Heche hired back, but the damage to her career was already done. Except for Return to Paradise (1998), made immediately after this, Heche has never gotten another starring role in a feature film.

When Robin (Anne Heche) asks Quinn (Harrison Ford) what age he is, Quinn hints that he's over fifty before whispering to her the answer (To which she says "You still look good," and Quinn replies, "I still am good!"). Ford was actually 55 by the time this movie came out.
