Although most artistic representations of Noah's ark depict it as a rounded boat, many historians claim the ark was actually box-shaped as the ark appears in this movie. The Hebrew word translated "ark" literally means "chest", and there is no mention of a bow, or any structure like that. As the ark was simply designed to float, any such addition would be pointless.

Many characters in The Hobbit are related to characters in The Lord of the Rings. Bilbo is of course Frodo's uncle. He is also a Took on his mother's side, making him a cousin to Peregrin Took (Pippin). Elrond is actually a great-uncle to Aragorn (several generations removed). Gloin is the father of Gimli, while the Elven King (named Thranduil) is the father of Legolas. Surprisingly, Gimli and Legolas do not appear in Rankin/Bass's subsequent film, 'The Return of the King (1981)(TV)'.

The first song sung by the dwarfs at Bag End, "Chip the glasses, crack the plates, that's what Bilbo Baggins hates..." is adapted from the version written in the book.
