The story about the spider and the web is a reoccurring theme in this film, oddly enough Chris Pine voices, the blonde Peter Parker in the 2018 film Spider-Man Into The Spiderverse, released the same year as this film.

Scenes for the film were shot at Dunfermline Abbey the final resting place of King Robert the Bruce.

Robert's father and Edward I did in fact fight in the 9th (and last) crusade. During this time Edward was almost killed in an assassination attempt. The crusade was generally a success for the English and allied forces but conflicts at home forced Edward to leave the campaign, at which time the crusade spirit had mostly died off.

This film is contemporary with the film Braveheart (1995) which depicted the exploits of the Guardian of Scotland, William Wallace. In fact, Robert the Bruce appears in that film, portrayed by Angus Macfadyen. Wallace makes no appearance in this film other than as a drawn and quartered corpse; his only other scene in the film was cut from the final print.

This film sets the record straight on some facts that had been changed for Braveheart (1995); King Edward I lived on for several years following the death of William Wallace, and died during one of his campaigns in Scotland (in Braveheart, both men die at the same time); neither Robert the Bruce nor his father was implicated in the betrayal of William Wallace (in Braveheart, Robert was partially responsible for the lost battle of Falkirk, and his father was involved in Wallace' capture). Furthermore, Braveheart implied that following Wallace' death, Robert was merely at Bannockburn to formally surrender to the English, and the ensuing battle was a spur of the moment; this film shows that Robert had actually been leading a long campaign that led him to confront the English at Bannockburn, culminating in a decisive victory.

Marjorie, the daughter of Robert the Bruce, went on to marry Walter Stewart, 6th High Steward of Scotland. Their descendants later inherited the Scottish crown and founded the House of Stuart, which would in turn unify the kingdoms of England and Scotland in 1603.

In the uncut film William Wallace is depicted and meets Robert The Bruce in Selkirk woods. This Scene was dropped from the film in its final cut.

Robert's child with Elizabeth was a son named David, who went on to rule the Scots for 40 years after his father's reign. When David died he left no heir, so the throne of Scotland passed to Robert's daughter Marjorie's son, Robert II.

No reference is made to Edward, Prince of Wales' (later Edward II) notorious homosexuality, something heavily alluded to in Braveheart (1995). Many historians dispute this claim though, since the real Edward fathered at least five children.
