After Team Rocket decides to sacrifice themselves to save Ash, Meowth says the line, "We're gonna die", which is said in the exact same fashion and with the same face as Martin Short's character from Jungle 2 Jungle (1997). The extreme snowboarding scenes were inspired in part by 1991 Windows and DOS game SkiFree, in which a yeti inevitably appears and devours the player-controlled skier after descending the mountain past a certain point. Director Ericson Core interprets the yeti as a representation of dharma, the Buddhist concept of cosmic law and order. Although no yeti is depicted in the movie, there is still a sense of danger and impending death on the slopes, the natural consequences of extreme sports which Bodhi and Utah seek to defy.
