This was the first feature film to be directed by Claude Chabrol, who made it in the village which was his birthplace, using local people in small parts. Part of the financing for the film came from an inheritance of his first wife's; later, after a divorce, Chabrol would sometimes jokingly claim that he had married her primarily to use her money for the film.

Claude Chabrol had originally intended to shoot The Cousins (1959) first, but due to its Paris setting, it would have been twice as expensive to film. He chose instead to shoot Le Beau Serge (1958) which took place in Sardent, a village where his mother lived before moving to Paris and where he often spent the summer with his grandmother. The film was shot over nine weeks in the winter of 1957-1958 on a budget of 32 million old francs.

The film initially ran to 2 hours and 35 minutes. Claude Chabrol cut out a great deal of quasi-documentary material to reduce the running time to 1 hour and 39 minutes, a decision he later regretted.

The characters François and Serge mention their mutual friend by the name of Jacques Rivette. This is of course an inside joke. This great Nouvelle Vague film director was not widely known back then.
