The film was made and released about two years after its source play of the same name by Neil Simon was first performed in 1991. The original Broadway production of "Lost in Yonkers" opened at the Richard Rogers Theater on 21st February 1991 and ran for 780 performances until 3rd January 1993. The play was nominated for five 1991 Tony Awards including the Best Play, Best Direction, Best Actress, Best Featured Actor and Best Featured Actress. Mercedes Ruehl and Irene Worth reprise their roles in the movie with Richard Dreyfuss as Louie, Susan Merson as Gert, Mike Damus as Arty, Brad Stoll as Jay, and Jack Laufer as Eddie. The play's setting according to the its intro is: "A two-bedroom apartment over Kurnitz's Kandy Store. Yonkers, NY. 1942".

The original Broadway theatre production of "Lost in Yonkers" was directed by actor-producer-director Gene Saks who was also nominated for a Tony Award for it. Saks directed the Simon written films The Odd Couple (1968), Brighton Beach Memoirs (1986), Barefoot in the Park (1967), and Last of the Red Hot Lovers (1972). Saks also co-starred in Simon's The Prisoner of Second Avenue (1975).
