Sherlock defeats Moriarty by pulling him over Reichenbach Falls, with both of them falling to their apparent deaths. Holmes is later shown to have survived. In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's story "The Final Problem" (intended to be the final Sherlock Holmes story), Holmes defeated Moriarty in the same way, by falling over a waterfall to the apparent death of both. However, in response to overwhelming public demand, Doyle wrote another story and resurrected Holmes.

Héctor admits that eventually, everybody ends up forgotten by those in the land of the living, exactly what starts happening to Ernesto once the truth is revealed.
-
When Miguel makes a big deal about how Ernesto de la Cruz is the best musician in the world, Héctor responds by acknowledging the songs Ernesto sings as pretty good while Ernesto's actual talent is only mediocre. Of course Héctor would know this: he wrote all of the songs that Ernesto claims are his, and no doubt recognized Ernesto for what he was a medium talent who couldn't cut it.
-
Songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez contributed one song for Coco (2017), the film's signature song "Remember Me". This marked the first time the husband-and-wife songwriting team composed music for a Pixar animated film. Ironically, they could not get involved with the Frozen short film Olaf's Frozen Adventure (2017) due to scheduling conflicts with Coco.
-
When Miguel says that Ernesto is the best musician ever, Hector disagrees. At first, it seems Hector is just being jealous. However later in the film, it is revealed that Ernesto stole Hector's songs and guitar and passed them off as his own. This means that earlier in the film, Hector was subtly calling his former partner a fraud.
-
There are several little music-references in the movie, mentioning popular hit songs in several lines, characters talking in song-titles, such as "The Show must go on", "nothing else matters", "I want it that way" and lots and lots of others.
-
When originally released, the film featured the short film Olaf's Frozen Adventure (2017) before the film, which runs 22 minutes long. Many moviegoers thought they had wandered into the wrong film. Beginning December 7, 2017, Olaf's Frozen Adventure (2017) was withdrawn from theatrical release, and no short film was substituted in its place.
-
This is the second Disney film of 2017 to feature a protagonist named Hector whose relationship with his daughter plays a key role in the film's story. The first was Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017).
-
Ernesto tells Miguel, "I did all my own stunts." when watching one of his movies. In more ways then one, he did really do the stunt from that movie: poisoning Héctor exactly like the antagonist did.
-
The paper designs seen hanging in the outdoor scenes are called Papel picado (perforated or pecked paper) a decorative craft considered a Mexican folk art.
-
The ninth Pixar film to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film, after Finding Nemo (2003), The Incredibles (2004), Ratatouille (2007), WALL·E (2008), Up (2009), Toy Story 3 (2010), Brave (2012), and Inside Out (2015).
-
The dog's name, Dante, is a reference to Dante Alighieri, the Italian poet and author of the 'Divine Comedy', originally called 'Comedia'. The Divine Comedy describes Dante's journey through the realm of the dead. In México, the Xoloitzcuintli (the Mexican hairless dog depicted in the film) is the guide of the deceased through his/her way to the Mictlán (the underworld, the place where all the souls go after death).
-
"Coco" in Spanish is a hypocorism for "Socorro" an actual common name for women, originated from "Virgen del Socorro" (Virgin of Relief).
-
During Miguel's Kick the Dog moment on Imelda, she sings part of the lyrics to "La Llorona" to convince him to listen to her reasons for banning music from the Rivera family. This foreshadows her performance of the song at Ernesto's Sunrise Spectacular.
-
Miguel's family angrily berates him every time he mentions his great-great grandfather, but not when he mentions De La Cruz. This is a clue that they're not actually the same.
-
Chicharron at one point confronts Hector about his missing femur. This is in fact true: as Coco is forgetting him and he starts to degrade further and further, Hector probably loses his own femur and replaces it with Chicharron's. This is why Hector appears to be limping all the time.
-
Miguel Rivera is the second youngest protagonist to be featured in a Pixar animated film; the youngest being Arlo from The Good Dinosaur (2015).
-
Miguel's last name, Rivera, is a reference to film producer Jonas Rivera, who has worked with Pixar Animation Studios since 1994 and produced two of their films: Up (2009) and Inside Out (2015).
-
In the deleted scene "Dia de los muertos," it features a group of people singing a calm ballad, before turning it over-the-top and practically bastardizes the meaning of the holiday. This could mean to foreshadow how Ernesto bastardizes Hector's song, "Remember Me," from a personal family song into a flashy fame song.
