Lau made his MLB debut on 12 September 1956 with his hometown team, the Detroit Tigers. He played for 11 seasons, between the Tigers, the Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves, Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Athletics. Lau was also one of the most renowned batting instructors in MLB history. He was instrumental in the development of baseball greats such as Hal McRae and George Brett. Charley Lau passed away exactly 51 weeks after "Max Dugan Returns" was released, on 18 March 1984, of cancer. He was 50 years old.
