The killer is Alex the younger brother of Robin the girl that fell from the window years earlier when her classmates practical joke got her killed. Alex secretly followed his sister and saw her demise and her so called friends cover it up. The last on his death list to be punnished is Nick...his surviving sisters longtime boyfriend (all the others and their loved ones are slain). During the crowning ceremony Lou...Kim (Alexs sis)s bitter ex who got suspended thanks to Alex...stuns Nick and takes his place. By doing this Alex not fully aware its not really Nick ends up decapitating him sending his severed head rolling out onto the walkway causing a panicked stampede. Kim finds Nick and tries to help him to safety, but is confronted by Alex. He attacks Nick and they struggle on the ground, Kim grabs the axe and when shes sure her boyfriend is out of the way, she strikes Alex in the head. Alex still masked turns around, Kim is able to get a good look at his eyes seeing how familiar they are to her, she suddenly realises in horror that she has just struck her own brother. Alex stumbles outside of the school and Lt. McBride points a gun at him. Kim runs out and tells the officer not to shoot. She bends down, takes the mask off her brother and cradles his head in her arms. Hes wearing smeared lipstick on his face. Before he dies, Alex cries out that he saw what happened six years ago. They did it, he says.

Prom Night was filmed over twenty-four days in Toronto, Ontario, Canada from August 7 to September 13, 1979. The Don Mills Collegiate Institute served as the main school location, while the Langstaff Jail Farm in Richmond Hill was used for the abandoned building featured prominently in the movie's beginning.

The shots of the killer tearing the photos out of the yearbook were shot by producer Peter R. Simpson after principal shooting on the movie had wrapped.

This was much more artfully made then Friday the 13th (1980), (which came out the same year and was a similar holiday themed slasher movie riding on the coattails of Halloween (1978) with a revenge story at its core). But for some reason Friday the 13th was a phenomenon, and while this was a hit, and it got better reviews, it did not have the same impact.

Both Jamie Lee Curtis and Leslie Nielsen starred with Adrienne Barbeau in two separate horror movies. Curtis in The Fog (1980), the same year as this movie and Nielsen in Creepshow (1982). But neither shared scenes with Barbeau.

There were deleted scenes of Leslie Nielsen talking morosely about his daughter's death to a doctor, and also scenes of him chopping wood, which were meant to point him out as a suspect. There were also deleted scenes with a psychiatrist informing Leslie Nielsen that his wife has serious problems, not just depression over his daughter's death, and another scene with her looking at a picture of Robin on the wall surrounded by flowers, which were meant to make Mrs. Hammond look like a suspect. There was also a scene with Leslie Nielsen speaking to a psychiatrist about Robin's death and its impact on Kim, how she gets depressed from time to time; and how Robin and Alex were twins, but Alex doesn't remember the death at all.

According to Paul Zaza, the prom scene was shot with actual disco hits that the production company later realized they could not afford the rights to. This gave Zaza a week and a half to create similar, original disco songs for this movie that were close, but not so close, that they could be sued.
