Before the race, J.J. (Burt Reynolds) tells Victor Prinzim (Dom DeLuise), "Get me Dr. Kildare. Get me Dr. Livingston. Get me Dr. Frankenstein. Just get me a doctor!" The doctor he finds, Dr. Nikolas Van Helsing, played by Jack Elam, played "Frank", Frankenstein's monster in the short-lived television show Struck by Lightning (1979).

In one of the earlier scenes in the movie, J.J. McClure (Burt Reynolds) said "Could get a black Trans Am", and then answers himself, "Naw, that's been done." This is a reference to Smokey and the Bandit (1977) and Smokey and the Bandit II (1980), which starred Reynolds, and were directed by Hal Needham, who directed this movie. DeLuise co-starred with Reynolds in Smokey and the Bandit II (1980).
