Columbia Pictures, which produced this movie, had had, two years earlier, a huge box-office success with the Bill Murray army comedy, Stripes (1981). The Survivors (1983), another military related satire, has a main trailer which noticeably re-used that film's distinctive trademark music, and music score which is not actually heard in this movie.

The beer drunk by most of the cast (excluding minors) was actually real beer. Jason London, however, refused to drink on set, and was trying to stop smoking as well.

The soldier memorial statues to which Milla Jovovich adds KISS make-up were featured more prominently in the shooting script. Several scenes were filmed from their theft, to their confiscation by the police. Some of these scenes were included as DVD bonus features, but several have never been officially released. Shortly after the film's release, Gene Simmons reportedly purchased the two statues for his private collection. He later sold them at the Butterfield's KISS Auction in 2000 for $6,000.
