Mary Poppins ending explained (spoilers)



  • George Banks (David Tomlinson) finally realizes that enjoying his children's happiness and love is more important than his work at the bank. Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews), her job completed, resigns and moves on to another family that needs this valuable lesson.

  • The wind changes, so Mary Poppins leaves, to the upset of the children. However, their father calls them, having mended the kite. They go and fly it, not even stopping to say goodbye to Mary Poppins, who quietly returns to the sky. Mr. Banks gets his job back and gets promoted to partner at the bank. Mr. Dawes Sr. liked Mr. Banks joke so well, he died laughing (literally, apparently).

  • Max drills the mark on his head (could be symbolism.) The mark that Max drills out is his ability to understand Pi, which, based on other examples we have seen, would lead him to his death. He chooses to live and not understand Pi. After that the little girl asks him some math questions. He just smiles and says I do not know.
