In the years since the movie, the Los Angeles Metro has been working towards extending subway service to Beverly Hills, on the Purple Line, not the Red Line. One of the proposed stops is at the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue, where they dammed the lava flow along the Miracle Mile.

Graffiti can be seen briefly at Rancho La Brea, with the quote "The magic is back". It refers to the New York Mets, being the slogan used by the team in its 1980 season.

During the evacuation of Wilshire Boulevard, after the rise of the volcano, two workers make a comment about Hieronymus Bosch, while they move various paintings. Bosch was a Netherlands painter (1450-1516), famous for his paintings about the Afterlife and apocalyptic visions.

The ash of the film was bought from Regal Insulation (now closed), from Crothersville, Indiana and consisted of as stated before, grounded up newspaper.

While Roark and Dr. Barnes are looking for lava under a street, Barnes comments the nonsense to build a big city with intense geological activity, and Roark answers mentioning a passage from Holy Bible. His passage is Matthew 7:26, which says: "...And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand".

This film lacks the usual Irwin Allen-style character semi-soap opera backstory set-ups, before the main story happens, that leads the audience to care about what happens to the characters. Accordingly, there is not much emotional attachment to the characters in this film. In contrast, "Dante's Peak" has more character focus, so there is more audience involvement with what happens to the characters.

During the fire at Rancho La Brea, just before the rise of the volcano, can be seen briefly in a wall "George C. Page Museum". It's one of the most important museums of Los Angeles.

When Amy Barnes tries to determine the time remaining for the lava to arrive at Cedars-Sinai Hospital to make an eruption, she concludes about 29 minutes. Curiously, Alan Silvestri's soundtrack for the movie has a length of about 29 minutes.
