The original script included several characters which were cut. There was another lion cub named Mee-Too, a bat-eared fox, and a rhino with a tickbird on his back. In fact the tickbird was kept and evolved into Zazu. Multiple characters have ended up scrapped for the final version of the first film - a little brother for Nala, a second meerkat, Nala's father (who would have been leader of another pride), Joka, a rock python who would have acted as a fourth lackey for Scar and a bat-eared fox named Bhati for example. Nala's brother, Mheetu, in particular was to have an important role, serving as a character for Nala to protect from the hyenas and Scar. Mheetu would also have been lured into the gorge, causing Simba to try and save him. However, he fails, causing Mufasa to rescue them, leading to his death.

When Kay is in the restaurant with James, the scene starts with Kay telling the punchline of a joke that's likely a variation of the following: A farmer went to town with his pet rooster to see a movie. Animals weren't allowed in the theater, so he put the rooster in his overalls' front pocket and smuggled it with him into the crowded theater. When the lights were dimmed, he let the bird peek out so it could see. The woman sitting next to him noticed, and she nudged her husband. "This man's a pervert, he's got his thing out." Her husband replied, "So? It's nothing you haven't seen before." To which his wife said, "But honey, this one's eating my popcorn!" The punchline (and likely a version of the setup) is the same as that delivered by the comedian in the early scene in the burlesque house in "The Sting" (1973).

Originally, the idea for the Arquillians was meant for a minor character, a bartender named Chuckie. To prove that he was an alien, he was to shoot a beam of light from his head. Rick Baker suggested that he was a tiny alien living inside the head of a robot body. Ultimately the character was cut, but the producers liked Baker's idea so much, they decided to use it for characters that were more important to the plot.

During one of Jay's attempts to keep the giant Edgar-bug from leaving, the bug simply wipes him aside. Director Barry Sonnenfeld said that this was one of the hardest artistic decisions go get past the studio executives; they wanted the bug to land a brutal punch, while Sonnenfeld thought that a big insect making a 'girly slap' would be much funnier. Sonnenfeld stuck to his guns until the studio finally relented.
