Originally, Riddick was to die at the end. But during production, Vin Diesel and the cast and crew, had found Riddick an interesting character, and Vin Diesel himself admitted in an interview that Riddick was a character you'd go places with. Instead, the ending was changed to Fry dying, instead of Riddick, so David Twohy could leave it open for a sequel, which eventually became The Chronicles of Riddick (2004).
