Emmy Award-winning television Director Jay Sandrich was drawn to Neil Simon's script because of the finely crafted writing. Sandrich said: "It's the type of comedy that I had been doing for years, I understood it completely. I think it has a certain flair and the madcap quality that some of those 1930s pictures had. With writing as good as this, I knew that everything else would fall into place. In this particular script, although it's very farcy and fast-paced, there are times when the relationships are very valid, and very human, and that's the important thing, that the audience care about these people, and really believe that they can exist. I think Neil's script is so well crafted, that you could take out the jokes, and play it as a drama."

Seems Like Old Times (1980) was the first of two Simon works that Sandrich directed, with Sandrich later going on to helm Neil Simon's London Suite (1996) for television.

For this movie, Neil Simon had a specific location in mind for the opening of the film. Simon said: "I wanted an isolated place for the writer (Chevy) Chase to be working on his book, and it had to be a place where he could easily be kidnapped, so it couldn't be in a metropolitan city, where it would be a little more difficult." Recalling a driving trip that he and his then wife, Marsha Mason, had made along Big Sur, on the California coast a few years prior to this movie being developed and made, Simon decided that the picturesque coastline would be a perfect place to start the movie, so as to give it a special look. Early in April 1980, the assembled cast and crew traveled to the splendid Carmel and Big Sur coastline of California, to begin the saga of this picture.

The comedy and the relationship of the three principal characters recalls such farce comedies as My Favorite Wife (1940), which starred Cary Grant, Irene Dunne, and Randolph Scott; The Awful Truth (1937), with Grant, Dunne and Ralph Bellamy; His Girl Friday (1940), with Grant, Bellamy and Rosalind Russell; and The Philadelphia Story (1940), with Katharine Hepburn, James Stewart, and again with Grant. "Farce", says writer Neil Simon, "is like juggling six balls in the air at one time, It's very difficult to keep them all going, The pace must be very fast, It's not done often, because we don't have those people (Cary Grant, Irene Dunne). You need actors who are facile enough to do this kind of comedy, Goldie, Chevy, and Chuck (Charles Grodin) can do it."

The residence used in the movie, is located at 242 Avondale Avenue, Los Angeles, California. The intersection where Chester runs the stop sign is at the intersection of Evanston and Avondale. There is no Lotus Drive in Brentwood, as mentioned by District Attorney Parks in a courtroom scene.

Local Los Angeles locations used, were the exterior of a Tudor house in Brentwood, and nearby streets for a car chase, the steps of Los Angeles City Hall, where Mayor Bradley visited the set, and the backlot at the Burbank studios for a night scene in the rain.
