This movie went into production before The Swarm (1978) was released. That movie was the beginning of the end for the big-budget/all-star disaster movie genre, when it tanked at the box-office. The failure of this movie, and When Time Ran Out... (1980) was the death knell. All three were produced and/or directed by the self-proclaimed "Master of Disaster" Irwin Allen.

Rogo forces the rescue helicopter to return him to the ship, and reveals that he was not just on a vacation with his wife, but was actually on board to protect a shipment of gold in the Poseidon's hold. Additionally, the novel is a sequel to the film, not Gallico's own original work, as some survivors of Gallico's original novel are not present, no referenced in the sequel book, and the descriptions of the characters are changed from the book to match the actors that played them in the film (Rogo's description has been changed from short and muscular to match actor Ernest Borgnine, etc.)
