For the second time, Oliver Stone directs an actor in an Oscar-nominated performance for playing a United States President. Both actors became the first of two actors nominated for playing that President. Anthony Hopkins and Frank Langella were both nominated for playing Richard Nixon, and Josh Brolin and Sam Rockwell were both nominated for playing George W. Bush. The only other actors to both be nominated for playing the same President were Raymond Massey and Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln. Massey was directed in Abe Lincoln in Illinois (1940) by John Cromwell, James Cromwell's father. Day-Lewis acted opposite Bruce McGill.
