During the panel, Mr. Crowe revealed that before casting John Mahoney as James Court, Dick Van Dyke expressed interest in the role, to the point where he met with Mr. Crowe and Mr. Brooks to discuss the screenplay. Mr Crowe also stated that early on in the casting process for that part, the production sent the screenplay to Richard Dreyfuss, who after reading it sent back a note to Mr. Crowe that read as follows: "Great script, want to play Lloyd."

  • After breaking up with Diane, Lloyd Dobler drives past Bob's Java Jive, a coffee pot-shaped building in Tacoma. Opened in 1927 as the Coffee Pot Restaurant, it was bought by Bob Radonich in 1955 and converted into a music club and dive bar. Many rock bands have played at Java Jive over the years, including the Tacoma-based band, The Ventures, which served as the house band in the early 1960s. The Ventures went on to become the top-selling instrumental guitar band in rock & roll history, with hits like "Walk Don't Run" and "The Theme from Hawaii 5-0."
