Roland Emmerich's influences on the film include Die Hard (1988), Man on Fire (2004), and a lot of Tony Scott films.

Channing Tatum was not interested in making the film at first because he had resolved not to play any characters who spent the entire movie holding a gun, but he liked the script and decided to meet to discuss the role of John Cale with Roland Emmerich; the meeting went so well that Tatum agreed to take the role immediately afterwards.

This is one of two movies released to cinemas in 2013 with the same premise: the garrisoning of the White House by criminals who hold the President hostage. The other is Olympus Has Fallen (2013). Both movies also reference the White House fire of 1814.
