Oscar Isaac is the third Star Wars actor or actress to work on an X-Men film, after Ray Park, who played Toad in X-Men (2000) and Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999), and Rose Byrne, who played the handmaiden Dormé in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002). Daisy Ridley was also in talks of playing Jean Grey before the role went to Sophie Turner.

In the first three movies, Angel, Psylocke, and Jubilee are portrayed as younger than Cyclops, Jean, Storm, and Nightcrawler. However, Jubilee is being portrayed as the same age as the four, while Psylocke and Angel are now older.

At 144 minutes, this is the longest X-Men film to date.

Originally, Apocalypse was to be a space entity, as in the comics, but Bryan Singer found the religious aspect of the character more interesting, and removed the space element from the film.

The three First Class films each have a part of Xavier's origin: becoming paralyzed (shot during the first X-Men mission), opening the school (family inheritance), and losing his hair (a side-effect when attacked by Apocalypse). None of these occur even remotely similarly to how they happened in the comics. He is paralyzed during a psychic battle with the Shadow King long before he creates the X-Men, the school has been funded by Angel's Worthington Industries since the 70s, and he had early hair loss since his 20s and 30s, possibly because of his powers.

(at around 40 mins) In X2: X-Men United (2003), there is a scene where Mystique is looking at Stryker's computer files. There is a list of mutant names, including a few we will see in later films. However, there is one name that might grab your attention: Kevin MacTaggert (aka: Proteus). This is the mutant son of Moira MacTaggert, played by Rose Byrne in X-Men: First Class (2011) and "X-Men: Apocalypse", as Professor X's (James McAvoy) love interest. There is a picture of Kevin in Moira's office at the CIA, and when the Professor sees the photo, he asks incredulously, "You have a son?!" Moira was married and had Kevin with her (villain) husband, Joe MacTaggert, who hated mutants. Since neither are mutants, the gene must be recessive. Note: In X2: X-Men United (2003) it's stated that the mutant gene is inherited via the father.

(at around 53 mins) The song playing when Apocalyse finds Angel is by the heavy metal band Metallica. It's called "The Four Horsemen" from the 1983 album "Kill 'Em All".

In X-Men (2000), Xavier says that Storm, Cyclops and Jean Grey were some of his earliest students. In this film, they are just now becoming his students, despite him having opened his school 20 years before. It has also been in continuous operation for the past 10 years. The characters are also more than 10 years old, and in fact appear to be in their mid-teens, so their ages would not have been affected by the time-travel used in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014).

Over a year after the film's release, Sophie Turner's future real life brother-in-law Nick Jonas starred opposite Karen Gillan in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017). Karen Gillan played the cyborg Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Infinity War (2018). X-Men: Apocalypse is based on the Marvel comic.

Bryan Singer wished to deliberately raise the level of graphic violence and gore in this film. The visual effects experts at Digital Domain complied with this concept, but thought the Egypt assassination attempt may have been too much.

(at around 9 mins) Scott's powers manifesting in a bathroom was something Bryan Singer had wanted to show in X-Men (2000). A bathroom had been constructed, but for budgetary and scheduling reasons, the scene wasn't filmed. The bathroom set was then re-purposed for the scene in which Mystique seduces the prison guard in X2: X-Men United (2003).

The very last shot of the post-credits scene at 2:23:42 is a close-up of the Essex Corp. briefcase as it's being shut. The combination dial is shown to be rested on 527 which is also the United States release date of the film, May 27th.

Simon Kinberg explains that, thanks to the time-travelling consequences of X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), history has been altered so that some mutants have turned out differently than in the previous films. This has enabled new versions of old characters to potentially exist and appear in these films (Cyclops, Jean Grey, Storm, Angel, Nightcrawler, Blob, William Stryker, Wolverine).

The film was to be subtitled "Age of Apocalypse" after the comic of the same name, but this was changed to "Apocalypse" for a more ominous title, as well as to avoid comparison with Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014), and The Age of Adaline (2015).
