Sean Astin was considered for the role of Jim, but he turned it down as he wasn't comfortable playing a villain. Christian Slater, Kiefer Sutherland, Keith Coogan and River Phoenix were also considered for the role.

Edward - who is himself apparently immortal - doesn't understand what's happened to his 'father.' When Peg inquires about him, Edward replies simply, "He didn't wake up."

The houses used in the film were a real community in Florida, completely unchanged, except for their garish exterior paint.

"When I first started drawing the characters, they were more sharp instruments, and the emotional thrust of it was a character who couldn't touch, a character who had emotions, who wanted to feel things, but, because of the sharpness of his fingers, couldn't actually touch somebody." Tim Burton goes on to note they weren't scissors in the initial drawings, just sharp items. He mentioned using things from your own environment for how he came up with scissors.

The little blond boy on the Slip 'N Slide, at the beginning of the film, is Nick Carter of The Backstreet Boys. Though uncredited in the film, Carter himself has confirmed this in several interviews.

Dustin Hoffman was considered for the role of Bill Boggs. But he was unavailable because he was busy shooting Dick Tracy (1990). Harvey Keitel, Harry Dean Stanton, Tom Skerritt, John Saxon, and Roy Scheider were also considered for the role.
