Most versions have Cleopatra being presented to Caesar in this unusual manner on his state visit, but the only historical account (by Cassius Dio) states that Cleopatra hid in the carpet to escape from Egyptian rebels under the command of her sister Arsinoe who were besieging her and Caesar in her palace.
